Concert Repertoire
Opening *
A taiko soloist beckons the call of the other group members who, in their individual way reply with an array of instruments, including the djembe, talking drum, shinobue flute and bodhran.
IndoKo *
Inspired by the music of North India, IndoKo delves into traditional compositions for the tabla as well as folk rhythms of the dhol.
Two Lullabies *
This medley features the 19th-century folk song, "Slumber my Darling", by American songwriter Stephen Foster and the modern-day Chinese popular song, "I'm Willing", written by Huang Guo Lun and Yao Qian.
Goshi *
Go is the Japanese word for five, and refers to the five elements, five members of the ensemble, and the rhythmic feel of five beats to a bar in the second half of the piece. Featuring a demanding stance by two drummers, Goshi is a showcase of dynamic strength and choreography.
Iwai - Kiyoshi Nagata
Literally means, “to celebrate”, this lively composition features the shinobue flute from Japan.
Zoku - Leonard Eto of Kodo
Zoku can mean tribe, clan or family and attempts to create a primal stirring within the subconscious. This arrangement includes a vocal section with audience participation.
I Bhfarraigí na hÉireann *
From Gaelic, the title translates to, “In Irish Waters”, which features elements of traditional Irish music against the backdrop of taiko rhythms as a story unfolds of Irish history and its relationship with the water.
* indicates compositions written or arranged by OnnanoKo Drumming Ensemble
